COOPAKs; the unsung heroes in your workplace
In 2021, around 2.5 million Australians, making up almost 12% of the population provided unpaid care for loved ones with disabilities, chronic health conditions or due to old age. Around 5.5 million Australians, making up over 26% of the population, provided unpaid care to a child. Hidden in this data, are the unsung heroes amongst us; those who are caring for both.
COOPAKs; (Carers of older parents and kids) –, find themselves at a unique crossroads; often mid career, with kids still at home, and ageing parents who need them too. Balancing these priorities can be challenging.
So, how can COOPAKs effectively support their loved ones, and continue to thrive at work?
Focus on wellbeing: Caring requires energy. To have energy we need to be well. If we are unwell ourselves then we can’t provide the standard of care we need to. If you’re not looking after yourself, the reality is that you have less energy to care for those around you. So, go ahead and schedule those doctors' appointments, indulge in your favourite hobbies, and take time for your own wellbeing. You'll be amazed at how much more you can give when your own cup is full.
Lean on your support network: You don't have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders alone. Reach out to your support network – your family, friends, and community. These are the people who understand the unique challenges you face as a COOPAK. They'll offer a listening ear, might lend a helping hand, or just be there to share a laugh or a tear. Remember, it truly takes a village, and you are not alone.
Leverage Workplace Flexibility: Advocate for workplace flexibility that accommodates your caregiving responsibilities. Discuss potential flexible work arrangements with your employer, such as adjusted hours, remote work options, or compressed workweeks. Communicate the benefits of these arrangements for both your well-being and productivity. Nurture Career Progression: Its realistic to consider that caring responsibilities may shift your career trajectory. But, having fulfilling and rewarding careers helps us feel happier and healthier outside of work too. Caring for others doesn’t mean putting your ambitions on hold. Look for opportunities to grow professionally, even if it means adjusting your timeline or taking a different path. Consider secondments, projects, or mentoring others – they can add value to your work and help you develop new skills, avoiding that feeling of stagnation if caregiving is your priority. Keep in mind it’s likely there will be ebbs and flows, both in your career and caregiving journey. Creating moments where you can focus on your own career growth and maintaining long-term career aspirations is important too.
